Alina Fernandez, daughter of former Cuban President Fidel Castro, is scheduled to speak Sept. 29 at Southern Illinois University’s student center as part of Latino Heritage Month. (National Hispanic Heritage Month is Sept. 15 – Oct. 15.)
The 53-year-old Fernandez posed as a Spanish tourist to make her escape from Cuba in 1993, with her daughter to save the 16-year-old from being sent away a state-run school.
The author of Castro’s Daughter: An Exile’s Memoir of Cuba (St. Martin’s Press, 1997) has said her hopes for a better life for Cubans were renewed when her father’s brother, Raul, officially replaced him as president in February.
