Berry College in Rome, Ga., received $9.4 million from the Ford Motor Co. Fund to renovate its Ford Complex, a group of Gothic Stone buildings built for the school by Henry Ford more than 70 years ago.

Elmhurst College in Illinois received a $50,000 grant through the National Conferences on Undergraduate Research Inc., for a comprehensive future study on possible expansion of nearby O’Hare International Airport.

The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston received an $8.9 million grant to continue its research on alcohol abuse.
North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro received $94,248.03 from the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund.

Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C., received $10.1 million from an anonymous donor. It is the largest in the 135-year history of the historically Black college.

The University of Colorado at Boulder received $250 million from Bill
Coleman, founder and chairman of BEA Systems. The endowment will fund advanced research and development of innovative technologies to enhance the lives of people with cognitive disabilities. It is believed to be the largest gift ever bestowed on a public university.

The University of Virginia’s School of
Engineering and Applied Science received $15 million from alumnus Gregory H. Olsen, president and CEO of Sensors Unlimited Inc., a fiber optics firm. The grant will complement a significant effort under way to expand engineering research activities at UVA.
