University of Nevada, Las Vegas Chancellor Demoted to Faculty

LAS VEGAS

The Nevada Board of Regents has unanimously voted to demote University of Nevada, Las Vegas President David Ashley to the faculty after critics called him ineffective and disengaged.

The action was taken Friday after Jim Rogers, who retired as chancellor June 30, urged regents to dismiss Ashley.

Rogers says he had received complaints that Ashley’s wife had mistreated university employees and that Ashley had failed to relate to regents, campus members and the Las Vegas community.

The 58-year-old Ashley said his wife’s alleged behavior should have nothing to do with his job performance.

Ashley will become a member of UNLV’s College of Engineering faculty. He’ll earn his pro-rated annual base salary as president, which is about $242,424, until his current contract ends.

Ashley became UNLV’s president in 2006.

Hampton University Names Nursing-school Dean Its Provost

HAMPTON, Va.

Hampton University has named its nursing-school dean its new provost.

The private, historically Black school on Thursday made Dr. Pamela Hammond provost, the school’s chief academic officer.

She replaces Dr. Joyce Jarrett, who served as provost since 2005.

Hampton University spokeswoman Yuri Mulligan says Jarrett stepped down for family reasons and will stay at the school as an endowed professor and the university editor.

Hammond was the nursing school’s dean since 1998. Her replacement is Dr. Arlene Montgomery, assistant dean for academic affairs at the nursing school.

USC Trustee Resigns; Charged with Bank Fraud in N.C.

COLUMBIA, S.C.

The vice chairman of the University of South Carolina board of trustees, Samuel Foster II, has resigned.

The State reported Friday that the 52-year-old Foster resigned July 1, two days after federal officials in Charlotte, N.C., charged him with bank fraud.

Foster had been on the board since 1984 and was in line to become the first African-American chairman of the school’s board.

Foster is accused of participating in a kickback scheme with an executive of BB&T and of filing a false federal tax return.

The newspaper said Foster’s resignation letter merely says he is leaving “for personal reasons.”

The school did not announce his resignation, but his biographical profile was removed from USC’s Web site Wednesday.

Foster could not immediately be reached for comment.
