Five Arrested After Shooting Injures Five on Langston Campus

by The Associated Press and Wire Reports

LANGSTON, Okla.

Five people were arrested after shots injured five people on the campus of Langston University early Sunday, a spokeswoman for the school said.

None of those either injured or arrested was a student at the school, Langston spokeswoman Ashley Gibson said.

She said the shooting occurred at about 1:10 a.m. Sunday in a parking lot on the campus.

Gibson said three of those injured were taken to the Oklahoma University Medical Center, while two were taken by private car to other hospitals in Oklahoma City about 35 miles southwest of Langston.

Police did not release the names of either those arrested or those injured.

In a separate incident that occurred about the same time, a woman was arrested after the car she was driving struck another person, Gibson said. She said police were investigating the driver’s motives and any possible connection to the shootings.

Gibson said the person hit by a car suffered only minor injuries and was not taken to a hospital. She did not identify either person, but said they were also not students at Langston.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is assisting campus police, Gibson said.

Langston University President JoAnn Haysbert said in a prepared statement that she was appalled and disappointed.

“We will pursue this to the fullest extent of the law,” Haysbert said. “Oklahoma law prohibits weapons and firearms from being carried on state property by unauthorized individuals; and we certainly do not and cannot tolerate or condone this type of irresponsible behavior at Langston University.”
