USM Offers Students Credit For Life Experiences

Many times students don’t think about receiving college credit for real life experiences.  Nevertheless, a program at the University of Southern Maine offers college students credit for learning what they have done outside the classroom.  According to WMTW.com, the Prior Learning Assessment Program, or PLA, is aimed at people who made the decision to go to work, rather than go to college. Counselors said they are people who have either faced layoffs, or need a degree to advance their current job. The average age of students participating in the program is 27 years old. A counselor at the university said college degrees are becoming more important, and it’s important to show how much students have accomplished.
