Black Cable Network Announces Major Initiative for HBCUs

ATLANTA
Major Broadcasting Cable Network (MBC Network) is giving historically Black colleges and universities the opportunity to submit broadcast-ready 30-second spots for airing free of charge during the network’s weekly block of prime-time programming (7-9 p.m. EST), the network announced last month.
The Highlight to Commencement spots titled “A Salute to Black Colleges” will begin airing April 1 and run until the end of the commencement exercise season in May. Individual exposure for the various institutions is equivalent to $1 million in advertising for HBCUs.
“Our ‘Salute to Black Colleges’ program is designed to work in conjunction with existing programs at the universities,” says Shaw University alumnus and network CEO and Chairman Willie E. Gary. “MBC Network is merely providing another avenue for additional exposure.”
MBC Network is a minority-owned and operated 24-hour cable network founded by Gary, heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield, former New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers All-Star Cecil G. Fielder, Marlon D. Jackson, formerly of the Jackson 5, and broadcast veteran Alvin D. James.
“The mission for the network is not only to provide a vehicle in which quality programming is accessible to African American families but also to become partners within the underserved communities,” says James. “The educational initiative developed by MBC Network is an extension of that mission and what could be more important than partnering up with our Black institutions of higher education?”
CEO Gary was honored last month at the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education’s (NAFEO) annual conference in Washington.
