Poll Shows Biden With Early Lead in 2020 Democratic Presidential Primary

A University of Massachusetts Amherst poll conducted the week after the 2018 Midterm Election shows former Vice President Joe Biden has a slight early lead of support over both senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary.

The poll was conducted online from Nov. 7-14  and included 796 respondents, 750 of which were registered Massachusetts voters.

When respondents were asked who they would support in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, Biden had the most support with 19 percent. Fourteen percent favored Sanders and 11 percent Warren.

Biden also had the strongest support among male voters in the state of Massachusetts.

“While Senator Warren has emerged as a front runner for the Democratic nomination, she trails both Senator Sanders and former Vice President Biden in her own state. If she wants to win the White House she will have to tend to her own backyard,” said Dr. Tatishe Nteta, associate professor of political science and director of the UMass Poll.
