WUSTL Announces New Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Equity

Washington University in St. Louis’ (WUSTL) chancellor-elect Dr. Andrew D. Martin has recently announced the creation of a universitywide Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Equity.

“The Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Equity will promote path-breaking research that deepens knowledge and shapes national dialogue; facilitate student learning; and provide an infrastructure for our faculty members to engage in public discourse and policy design both locally and regionally,” Martin said.

In addition, the center will support student research, particularly in Asian American, Latinx and comparative race and ethnicity studies; recruit visiting scholars and establish partnership opportunities among university faculty, students and members of the St. Louis community, according to a WUSTL release.

The center is the result of thorough planning and assessment conducted by a task force created as part of the Commission of Diversity and Inclusion. The commission is a significant two-year enterprise to implement the Steering Committee for Diversity and Inclusion’s 12-point university wide action plan for improving diversity.

The center’s founding director will be Adrienne Davis, vice provost and the William M. Van Cleve Professor of Law. It will formally launch during the fall 2019 semester.
