Clark Atlanta University President to Retire Next Year

ATLANTA
Dr. Thomas W. Cole Jr. announced last month that he will retire next year as president of Clark Atlanta University after 13 years.
Cole oversaw the successful merger of Clark College and Atlanta University, and has helped raise millions of dollars to enhance the university’s reputation. During his tenure, enrollment has risen from 3,159 to more than 5,000, and the number of faculty members has gone from 197 to 330.
“I think the timing is right,” says Cole, 60. “We have made remarkable progress.”
Cole says he will work to complete the first phase of the university’s $160 million capital campaign. The school has raised $90 million, and Cole hopes to raise another $20 million before leaving in June 2002.
The money will be used for scholarships, endowed professorships, construction and renovations.
