Southern Regional Education Board’s (SREB) Doctoral Scholars Program will host the annual Institute on Teaching and Mentoring conference Oct. 24-27 at the Marriott Marquis in Atlanta, Georgia.
The conference will address the lack of underrepresented students and faculty within higher education. Around 1,200 Ph.D. students and college faculty members will be in attendance.
According to SREB, only around six percent of U.S. faculty members are African American and under 6 percent are Hispanic or Latino. However, in terms of college students, 19 percent are Hispanic while 13 percent are Black.
Throughout the event, there will be sessions discussing financial planning, the importance of diversifying the faculty and ways to publicize research. Scholars will also be given the opportunity to receive feedback on their curriculum vitae and awards will be given out at the end of the conference to honor faculty mentors.
