Educational Technology Entrepreneur Named Chair of Hampshire’s Board of Trustees

Hampshire College’s Board of Trustees has appointed Jose Fuentes, an educational technology entrepreneur, as its next chair—a role in which he plans to help update the school’s curriculum, support a major fundraising campaign, implement a sustainable business model and celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary.

A 2005 alumnus of Hampshire, Fuentes has been involved in various business ventures since his graduation. He is a co-founder of the popular online language learning platform Duolingo, which has more than 300 million users worldwide, and a managing partner at Savory, a catering company which delivers thousands of meals in NYC. His latest project involves founding an educational technology company that helps community colleges retain and graduate more students using online resources. The project is called “Maison.”

Fuentes has been a trustee since 2016 and most recently served as vice chair. He holds a bachelor’s degree in behavioral economics.

“Over the past decade since I graduated, education has undergone massive disruption,” said Fuentes. “I’m excited to help remake Hampshire as it empowers students with advanced entrepreneurial, critical thinking and technology skills that they need to be successful in whatever path they choose in life.”
