Senate Approves Modest Budget Increase For Minority-Serving Institutions

After some delays, the U.S. Senate has approved an education spending bill for next year with only modest increases for minority-serving colleges and universities.
The bill from the Democratically controlled Senate largely mirrors President Bush’s proposals for historically Black colleges. By comparison, the House of Representatives has approved larger increases for HBCUs and other minority-serving institutions.
Final action on the bill was delayed because of anti-terrorism legislation as well as the detection of anthrax in Senate office buildings. The Senate and the House of Representatives still must reconcile differences between their respective bills. Lobbyists say they do not expect final action until mid-December.
A House-Senate conference committee ultimately will resolve differences between the bills. The accompanying chart details certain sections.
