Massey Appointed to Presidential Council
ATLANTA
President George W. Bush has appointed Dr. Walter E. Massey, president of Morehouse College in Atlanta, to his Presidential Committee on Science and Technology. Bush made the announcement last month at the White House.
“I am pleased and excited to have been asked to serve, again, on the President’s Council on Science and Technology,” Massey says. “The contributions science and technology can make to our nation are now more important than ever,” says Massey, who was appointed to the committee under former President George Bush.
Massey is one of 24 members of the board named from organizations across the country. The president has asked the council to address four specific issues:
• The science and technology of combating terrorism;
• Improving energy efficiency;
• Federal investment in science and technology and its economic benefits; and
• Infrastructure for the 21st century.
Also appointed to the board last month was Dr. G. Wayne Clough, president of the Georgia Institute of Technology.
The panel will be co-chaired by John H. Marbuger, III, the director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and E. Floyd Kvamme, a partner in the high-tech venture capital firm of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.
Other university officials on the committee include: Dr. Charles, J. Arntzen, chair of the Department of Plant Biology at Arizona State University; Dr. Marye Anne Fox, chancellor of North Carolina State University; Dr. Martha Gilliland, chancellor of the University of Missouri-Kansas City; Dr. Luis M. Proenza, president of the University of Akron; and Dr. Charles M. Vest, president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
