Church Raises $100,000 for College Students Amid Pandemic

The Bethel Baptist Institutional Church in Jacksonville, Fla. awarded 85 students with scholarships worth at least $1,000 for tuition, books and other fees amid the COVID-19 pandemic, according to First Coast News.

Every summer for the past 20 years, Bethel has held an annual walk-a-thon to raise funds to support this initiative, but due the pandemic it was canceled.

Instead, the church hosted a six-hour virtual “Scholarthon” raising $100,785 for students attending school this fall.

“This was not in partnership with corporate sponsors, who gave us matching funds,” Bishop Rudolph McKissick Jr., lead pastor of Bethel told his congregants. “Every dime that we are able to give these students, is because of your giving.”
