“Dr. Stiff was one of the most equity-minded and fair-minded people I had ever met, and he saw the best in us all,” said College of Education Dean Mary Ann Danowitz. “He also had a wonderful sense of humor, a delightful laugh and a huge smile. He was a good friend, teacher and colleague who took the time to mentor many students and faculty, especially junior faculty. His passing will be felt very deeply and personally by not only this college and NC State but by the entire field of education.”

He joined the school’s College of Education in 1983, rising through the ranks as assistant professor, associate professor and professor of mathematics education, interim associate dean and associate dean for faculty and academic affairs, before retiring on July 1, 2020.

He co-authored more than 70 primary and secondary education mathematics textbooks and was co-founder of consulting firm EDSTAR Analytics, Inc. He is also the winner of the 2019 National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Lifetime Achievement Award.

Stiff held a bachelor’s in mathematics from UNC-Chapel Hill, master’s degrees in mathematics from Pennsylvania State University and Duke University and a Ph.D. in mathematics education from NC State’s College of Education.

A Zoom memorial service for Stiff will be held by his family 11 a.m. March 26. Register here.

Stiff’s family is asking that gifts be made in his memory to the Agnes and Garfield Stiff Endowment, which Stiff created to honor his parents.
