ETS will be hosting a free virtual conference to discuss student-focused teaching methods Apr. 20-21.

Dr. Michael T. NettlesDr. Michael T. Nettles

The conference is titled “A Different Kind of Thinking: Shifting Approaches to Assessment and Teaching and Learning for the Benefit of All Students.”

“The time is now to leverage growing knowledge about students and to embark on a new conversation and path toward placing the broad population of students at the center of teaching, learning and assessment,” said Dr. Michael T. Nettles, senior vice president and Edmund W. Gordon Chair at ETS’s Policy Evaluation Research Center. “This represents a paradigm shift away from one-day high-stakes assessments that inadvertently sort students into educational haves and have nots and a pivot toward considering the conditions that will accommodate students’ capacity to reveal who they are and encourage their optimum performance.

The event will go from noon to 5:30 p.m. EDT on both days.

The convening will cover matters such as the student success impacts of reduced bandwidth and assessment design methods. Students either going into or enrolled in postsecondary education will be the focus.
