TSU Debate Team Wins Olympics of Forensics Competition

Houston
The Texas Southern University Debate team returned to Houston late last month as champions of the International Forensics Association 12th annual Championship Tournament in Rome. The 17-member team succeeded in garnering a sufficient number of points to rank first place and earned the title International Champion of Forensics 2002.
The debate team competed in more than 10 events and won first place in Dramatic Interpretation, Duo Dramatic Interpretation, Parliamentary Debate and Top Novice Duo.
The team won a total of 20 awards competing against 24 other teams from around the world.
“This has been a spectacular year for the team,” says the team’s coach Dr. Thomas F. Freeman. “We have performed before the president of the United States and now competed and bested our peers in international competition.”
This is not the first time the team has competed and won at the International Forensic Championship (IFC). In 1992 the team traveled to London to compete in the IFC and won the title. The team repeated that win in 1994 at the Munich, Germany IFC. In 1999, at the Rome IFC, the team fittingly won first place in Classical Roman Oratory.
