Colorado State University College of Business professor of marketing Kathleen Kelly was awarded a $100,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to conduct a study on the most effective ways to design tobacco-prevention advertisements for Latino youth. The study will focus on determining the most effective language — English, Spanish or “Spanglish” — and themes in tailoring effective tobacco-prevention messages for bicultural Mexican American youth.
J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College (Va.) has been awarded a $512,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to support the Pathways to Teaching project. The project will focus on recruiting more minority students into teaching and will target high-school students who are enrolled in technical centers as well as Reynolds students in associate’s applied science programs who aspire to become teachers.
North Carolina A&T State University was awarded a $2.7 million grant from the Office of Naval Research to establish a “Center for Nanoscience and Nanomaterials” (CNN) that will provide important developments to the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security in the area of security preparedness through innovative materials solutions.
Pima Community College (Ariz.) has received the largest donation in its history from the Thomas R. Brown Family Foundation. The $1 million gift will help train healthcare workers and address the critical shortage of nurses, technicians, therapists and other industry occupations.
Rust College (Miss.) received a $500,000 gift from former trustees, Jeanne and Henry Varnell of Memphis, Tenn., in support of the college’s $10 million capital campaign fund.
Tarrant County College (Texas) has received a $509,000 skills development fund grant from the Texas Workforce Commission. This grant will provide customized training for 500 workers at 15 area hospitals in computers, language and communication, leadership, team development and healthcare specific topics. TCC, in partnership with the Tarrant County Workforce Development Board, just completed a customized training program for 900 aircraft, semiconductor and automotive workers through a $1.1 million High Technology Training for Adults Initiative grant from the state of Texas and the U.S. Department of Labor.
