Auburn University (Ala.), The Ohio State University, the University of Florida, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University together received a $754,983 four-year grant from the National Science Foundation to fund the Scholars of the Future program. The program, which will be administered at Auburn University and replicated at Virginia Tech, is designed to increase the number of underrepresented graduate students and faculty in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science and other information technology disciplines.
Norfolk State University’s (Va.) Center for Global Education, in cooperation with the Office of International Programs at Tidewater Community College, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar-In-Residence grant for the 2004-2005 academic year. The grant will enable the university to host Andrew Mwenda Mbatiah, a senior scholar from the University of Nairobi.
Savannah State University (Ga.) received two grants totaling $248,525 from the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) to improve student retention and enhance selected academic degree programs. The DOE awarded $49,705 in directed grants program funding to the university to improve student retention and graduation rates. The early intervention project will target high-risk incoming students who will be enrolled in the Freshman Year Experience program. The university also received $198,820 to enhance the environmental science and mass communications degree programs. The grant funds will be used to acquire new equipment, software and faculty for both degree programs.
Virginia State University’s School of Business was awarded $1.9 million from the U.S. Department of Defense to launch the university’s Department of Defense SME (Science, Mathematics and Engineering) Education Center. The grant represents the largest ever for the School of Business.
