Lending a Helping Hand
Thank you for calling attention to President William Harvey’s excellent mentoring of chief administrators who later become college presidents (see Oct. 21, 2004). His grooming such leaders for a presidency bodes well for his commitment to genuine service in the academy. Lending a helping hand to others with leadership potential increases President Harvey’s stature as president of Hampton University — one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in America. The former president of Hampton University and Kentucky State University, Dr. Carl M. Hill, along with President Raymond M. Burse, also formerly of Kentucky State University, helped me grow professionally and intellectually. While I had no aspirations to be a college president (I would like to live a long time), I am grateful that these two former presidents helped me to become what I am today.More college presidents like Drs. Harvey, Hill and Burse are needed to prepare another generation of leaders to build our great colleges and universities.
