City University of New York LaGuardia Community College has received a $7.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to enable students and schools to benefit from teacher training programs and additional support services, helping students reach higher standards of academic performance.
Meharry Medical College has been awarded a five-year, $2.5 million grant by the Kresge Foundation of Troy, Mich., to help hire four new development officers, buy new marketing technology and train fund-raisers with more sophistication.

The Duke University School of Medicine has been awarded $2.4 million to establish new genetic and genomic labs at the school. The money also will be used to recruit genetic researchers.
The Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minn., will receive $1.6 million over the next four years. The award is part of a grant in research support the institute is donating to 41 medical schools across the country.
The University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis will receive $1.6 million over the next four years. The university plans to use its grant to recruit scientists, especially in the areas of cancer, transplants, diabetes and AIDS. Part of the funds will also be used to expand the genetics laboratory.
The libraries at the University of South Carolina have received a gift of $1.1 million for reference and information resources from the estate of Dr. Robert Chamberlain of Arlington, Va. Funds will be used to acquire electronic reference resources for all academic areas.
Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y., is the recipient of a $1 million scholarship fund set up with a gift from Virginia and R. Carlos Carballada. The fund, which will produce about $50,000 worth of scholarships in its first year, will be used to help students from Buffalo, Rochester, the town of Arcade in Wyoming County and Brooklyn.
The Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, N.M., has received a $673,000 grant from the Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Fund for the development of a new Native American Youth Art Outreach Program.
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro has announced the creation of a scholarship program for immigrant and refugee students. Centura Bank gave the university $110,000 to pay for 16 scholarships during the next four years. The money also will pay for internships at community organizations, as well as the development of diversity-training materials for Centura employees.
