The City University of New York-City College has received a $2.7 million grant from the National Science Foundation to boost research in the realm of nanotechnology hybrid molecular solid systems and to support the establishment of a new Ph.D. program in chemistry in the subdiscipline of nanoscale devices.
Creighton University will use a $1 million gift from Connie and Lee Kearney to partially fund a legal clinic at its School of Law. The gift will establish a charitable trust to provide funds for the Milton R. Abrahams Legal Clinic in Omaha. The trust also will endow the clinic directorship.
Mississippi Valley State University has received a $1 million grant from the Mid-Delta Empowerment Zone Alliance to provide students with greater computer access by upgrading a computer laboratory in the university’s library and creating Living and Learning Centers in 10 of its dormitories.
Stillman College was awarded a $500,000 matching-contribution grant by the Bush Foundation of St. Paul, Minn. for the first phase of its Comprehensive Capital Campaign to renovate campus buildings. Stillman, which had to match the Bush award dollar for dollar, collected more than $650,000 from alumni, corporations, faculty and staff, trustees and other foundations.
Radford University has received $300,000 in federal funding for a mobile health clinic that will provide medical services to several southwestern Virginia counties. The clinic, called Partners Allied for Collaboration in Education and Service, or PACES, will be fully-equipped with items such as a wheel chair lift, telemedicine equipment and examination tables. It will serve about 1,000 residents a year and is expected to be traveling two to three days a week by spring 2001.
The W.K. Kellogg Foundation has announced the distribution of 18 grants of up to $100,000 each for colleges and universities to continue the Engaging Latino Communities for Education, or ENLACE, initiative. Participating institutions form partnerships with communities, K-12 systems and businesses to give Hispanic students the support they need to succeed throughout their academic careers.
