Congressional Conference Committee Approves Funding for Tribal College

A House-Senate conference committee has approved a Department of the Interior appropriations bill that would include federal funding for United Tribes Technical College, said Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D.
The final version of the bill still needs approval by the House and Senate.

In his budget, President Bush cut funding for the Bismarck college for the fourth consecutive year. Congress has restored the money for the school in each of the past three fiscal years.

The House in May approved $3.45 million for the school, and the Senate in June approved $3.5 million. Dorgan said $3.5 million is the amount approved by the conference committee.

UTTC is run by American Indian tribes from the North Dakota area. College officials say it would close without federal support.
