University of Alabama President Resigns, Cites Wife’s Health

The president of the University of Alabama is quitting after less than two months in the position.

A statement released by the university on Wednesday said Guy Bailey is stepping down because of his wife’s health.

The release quotes Bailey as saying he and his wife Jan made the decision together after discussing how to best address her health. It doesn’t disclose what sort of health issues she is experiencing.

Bailey took over as president of the Tuscaloosa campus on Sept. 5. The two-time graduate and Alabama native moved back to the state after leaving the presidency at Texas Tech University.

Bailey’s salary and incentives package at Alabama is worth as much as $652,000 annually.

University trustees are scheduled to meet Thursday and will discuss a successor to Bailey.
