Professional Appointments

Miguel Cairol has been named vice president for administration and finance at New York City College of Technology/CUNY. Previously, he served as acting dean for planning and special assistant to the president. Cairol holds a bachelor’s from California State University, Los Angeles, master’s degrees from The CUNY Graduate Center and from Baruch College/ CUNY and a doctorate from The CUNY Graduate
Center.

Dr. Zenobia L. Hikes has been named vice president for student affairs at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Most recently she was vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Spelman College in Atlanta. Hikes earned a bachelor’s from Spelman, a master’s from Georgia Southwestern University and a doctorate from the University of Delaware.

Dr. Vanessa R. Lancaster has been appointed director of the Felton Laboratory School at South Carolina State University. Most recently she served as the state director for the Teacher Advancement Program for the Milken Foundation and the South Carolina State Department of Education. She earned a bachelor’s from Morris College and a master’s and doctorate from South Carolina State.

Dr. Gordon Nakagawa has been named associate dean of humanities at California State University, Northridge. Most recently he served as interim associate dean and chair of Asian American studies. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Ohio University and a doctorate from Southern Illinois University.

Dr. Christopher Odionu has been named chief information officer at Alabama A&M University. Most recently he was associate vice president and chief information officer at the University of Detroit. He earned a bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate from the University of Houston.

Dr. Nathaniel Pollard Jr. has been named executive vice president/provost at Johnson C. Smith University in North Carolina. A former president of Bowie State University, he earned a bachelor’s from Miles College and a doctorate from Oklahoma University.

Dr. Beverly J. Robinson has been named the new provost for Palm Beach Community College’s Belle Glade campus. Most recently she was associate vice president of community development at
Central Florida Community College. Robinson earned a bachelor’s from Albany State University, a master’s from the University of North Florida and a doctorate from Columbus University in New Orleans.

Dr. Robert G. Rodriguez has been named the associate director of the McNair Scholars Program at the University of Kansas, where he has served in various capacities over the past eight years. He received a bachelor’s from the University of California, Irvine and a master’s and doctorate from the University of Kansas.

Dr. Dorothy Singleton has been appointed director of North Carolina Central University’s Institute for the Study of Minority Issues. Most recently, she served as director of the Office of Student Services and Certification at Winston-Salem State University. Singleton earned a bachelor’s from Shaw University, a master’s from North Carolina Central and a doctorate from the University of South Florida.

Dr. Maria D. Suarez has been appointed director of the Douglass Project for Women in Math, Science and Engineering and assistant dean at Douglass College, Rutgers University. She earned a bachelor’s from the University of Puerto Rico and a doctorate from Michigan State University.

Dr. Peggy Valentine has been named dean of the School of Health Sciences at Winston-Salem State University. She previously served as associate dean of pharmacy, nursing and allied health sciences at Howard University. Valentine earned a bachelor’s from the Washington Technical Institute, a master’s from Howard University and a doctorate from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Dr. Cynthia Young has been named director of Boston College’s Black studies program. Most recently she was an assistant professor of English and American studies and ethnicity at the University of Southern California. Young earned a bachelor’s from Columbia University and a master’s and doctorate from Yale
