Princeton University offers ‘Vodcasting’

PRINCETON, N.J.
Princeton University’s University Channel is offering the “vodcast” — downloadable videos that can be watched on digital devices. Using Apple’s iTunes service, the videos can be downloaded free of charge to personal computers and other devices, such as the recently introduced video-enabled Apple iPod player. Apple has introduced the vodcasting technology as a way of getting video file distribution over its iTunes service.

This past summer, Princeton’s Wilson School of Public and International Affairs launched the University Channel Web site in an effort to offer access to academic events to a public audience. University Channel officials initially offered podcasting, the audio equivalent of vodcasting. University Channel’s executive director, Donna M. Liu, explained to the Daily Princetonian that,  “commercial media doesn’t put out full-length presentations” of interesting lectures and speeches.

The University Channel Web site is <http://uc.princeton.edu/main/>.
