DURHAM N.C.—The longest-serving provost in the history of Duke University says he is stepping down from the position.
Peter Lange, who has been the school’s chief academic officer since 1999, will relinquish the role at the conclusion of his third term next June. Lange will return to the faculty as the Thomas A. Langford University Professor for political science.
Lange guided the university through two five-year strategic plans, “Making a Difference” and “Building on Excellence,” which led to the creation of Duke’s signature interdisciplinary institutes.
He also oversaw program planning for expansion that added new academic, student life, library and arts facilities. Nearly two-thirds of current faculty members were appointed during his tenure, as were all current deans.
Duke President Richard Brodhead has named a committee to search for Lange’s successor.
