Trinity College Hosts First Islam Awareness Week
Hartford, Conn.
The Trinity College Muslim Students Association will hold their first annual Islam Awareness Week beginning April 3, entitled “Bridging the Gap: Islam’s True Colors.” The week will provide the Trinity and Hartford communities with a forum for intellectual and spiritual conversation on the world’s second largest religion and America’s fastest growing faith. Yale University professors and student presenters will offer an array of perspectives on Islam as a religion and Muslims as people.
Events include: “Allah Made Me Funny,” a short film on Muslim standup comedy that challenges Muslim stereotypes, and a discussion with Matthew Ingalls. A convert to Islam, Ingalls is pursuing his Ph.D. in Islamic Studies at Yale. “American Muslims: What Are They Facing Now?” is a lecture and discussion with one of the country’s best-known experts on Muslim life. Dr. Jane Smith is professor of Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations at the Hartford Seminary, and the author of several books, including, Islam in America; and A Conversation on Islam and Women with a Muslim Woman. The week will also feature a luncheon discussion with Tuba Nur, a Turkish-German practicing Muslim woman who spent seven years as a board member of the Christian-Muslim Dialogue Foundation in Germany. Nur is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations at Hartford Seminary.
