Department of Defense Awards $40.4 Million to Universities for Research Equipment

WASHINGTON

The Department of Defense has announced plans to award $40.4 million to academic institutions to support the purchase of research instrumentation. The awards are being made under the Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP).

The 183 awards to 88 academic institutions are expected to average about $217,000, but will likely range from about $51,000 to $1 million. DURIP helps colleges purchase state-of-the-art equipment or develop new university capabilities with the intention of performing cutting-edge defense research.

University researchers often have trouble purchasing expensive scientific equipment using research contracts and grants alone. DURIP helps offset the costs if the equipment is more than $50,000 and will be used to conduct defense-related research.

The Army Research Office, the Office of Naval Research and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research all requested proposals from university researchers working in national security or defense-related areas. Primary areas that will receive DURIP funding include information technology, remote sensing, propulsion, electronics and electro-optics, advanced materials, and ocean science and engineering. More than 930 proposals were returned to the three offices, requesting $254 million in support for research equipment.
