Boston Univ. Launches Sports Podcasting

BOSTON
Boston University is making video downloads of its athletic events and sports video content available through the Apple iTunes Music Store, making it the first school to use the popular Apple technology for sports broadcasting, according to school officials. Last month, BU introduced the new service with a video highlights podcast of a 4-1 BU victory over
the University of Massachusetts in the NCAA Hockey East Tournament quarterfinals.

The podcast downloads, averaging three-and-a-half minutes in length, were made available free of charge roughly one hour after BU hockey games during the NCAA tournament. School officials say last month’s podcasts helped fill a television coverage void in college hockey.

The school’s athletic department, home to 24 men’s and women’s varsity programs, expects to provide a variety of video podcasts of game highlights, interviews and content in other sports, particularly targeting its 250,000 alumni, 16,000 undergraduate students, 12,000 graduate students and 9,000 faculty and staff.

“With this service, our fans can now get the content they want and view it at their convenience,” says the university’s Director of Athletics, Michael Lynch. “We are proud of this offering and look forward to providing this advantage to our fans.”

In using the iTunes Music Store, subscribers are able to download video clips and transfer them to their handheld Apple iPod video players. For fans without iPod players, the video clips can be viewed on either laptop or desktop computers by using Apple’s free iTunes software.
