White House Initiative on HBCUs Appoints New Executive Director
Former Howard University administrator Charles M. Greene has been appointed executive director of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Greene will oversee the presidentially appointed HBCU board of advisors, work with the 32 federal agencies that provide federal grants and contracts to HBCUs and serve as the liaison between the executive branch and HBCUs.
“Charles’ broad experience in business, community development and government will be a tremendous asset in his work on behalf of the nation’s many historically Black colleges and universities,” says Margaret Spellings, secretary of the U.S. Department of Education.
Greene has served in a number of political, business and administrative roles throughout his career. Immediately prior to his appointment, he was director of community and economic development for Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa. He has also been president and chief executive officer of a workforce development agency in Philadelphia and served as a managing regional vice president of Lockheed Martin. Greene was also assistant vice president for development at Howard University and was Philadelphia’s deputy mayor for intergovernmental relations during the administration of former Mayor Edward G. Rendell.
Greene received a bachelor’s from Virginia Union University, a historically Black university in Richmond, Va.
