Southern University’s (La.) Center for Social Research has been awarded a $350,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help fund the Universities Rebuilding America Partnership. The two-year program assists low- to moderate-income residents of the Baton Rouge and New Orleans corridor. The center will provide technical training, assist small and minority-owned businesses, and offer access to computers and the Internet.
Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity has donated $450,000 to the three historically Black colleges and universities in the New Orleans area. Southern University at New Orleans, Xavier University of Louisiana and Dillard University will each receive $150,000 to provide scholarships for students who have been severely impacted by Hurricane Katrina.
Peter T. Paul, a 1971 alumnus of Boston University’s Graduate School of Management and president of Paul Financial LLC, has promised $1.5 million over five years to fund 10 career development professorships at the university. The three-year professorships will be awarded to professors in their first two years at BU.
Texas College has received a $246,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to address high-risk drinking in youth and young adults. The grant will be used to identify and test effective campus-based alcohol and drug prevention program models.
Huston-Tillotson University (Texas) has received a $248,000 grant from the Office of Minority Health to help address racial disparities in health care. The grant will provide education and training for people who are interested in becoming health and mental health advocates.
Yale University (Conn.) received a $4.8 million gift from the Lisbet Rausing Charitable Fund to launch an environmental leadership and training program to promote biodiversity conservation in tropical rain forests. The program will be housed within the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and will feature workshops and field trips to Panama City and Singapore, as well as sites in South and Southeast Asia and Central and South America.
