Winthrop University President Won’t Contest Dismissal

ROCK HILL, S.C. ― The president of Winthrop University won’t challenge a recent vote by trustees to fire her.

The university announced Friday that president Jamie Williamson had informed the school’s board of trustees that she will not invoke her right to appear on June 26 to contest her dismissal.

The board voted 21-1 last week to give Williamson a notice of termination, one day after she and her husband returned $27,000 he was paid last year while part-time working in her office. Under her contract, Williamson is entitled to a “reasonable opportunity to be heard” before the board can finalize her dismissal.

Provost Debra Boyd has assumed the duties of the university’s president until a permanent replacement is hired.
