Professional Appointment

Joseph Garcia has been appointed president of Colorado State University-Pueblo. He was previously president of Pikes Peak Community College. Garcia earned a bachelor’s from the University of Colorado-Boulder and a law degree from Harvard Law School.

Dr. Clarence E. Ates has been appointed executive vice president of student learning at NorthWest Arkansas Community College. He was most recently executive vice president at North Lake College. Ates holds a bachelor’s from Oakwood College, a master’s from Oklahoma State University and a doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Suraiya Baluch has been appointed director of the Sexual Harassment/Assault Advising, Resources and Education Office at Princeton University (N.J.). She had been assistant director of counseling services at Barnard College. Baluch earned a bachelor’s from Rutgers University, a master’s from Columbia University and a doctorate from Fordham University.

Dr. Krystal Banfield has been appointed director of Berklee City Music Boston. She was most recently director of education and community partnerships for VocalEssence, a choral arts organization. Banfield earned a bachelor’s from Howard University, a master’s from Indiana University and a doctorate from the University of St. Thomas.

Dr. Allen Burdowski has been named associate dean for graduate and professional studies at St. Francis College (N.Y.). He was most recently director of the Faculty Center for Curriculum and Technology. Burdowski holds a bachelor’s from Hunter College and a doctorate from
New York University.

Dr. Valerie S. Fields has been appointed assistant vice president of student affairs at South Carolina State University. She earned a bachelor’s from Southern University and A&M College, a master’s from the University of Louisiana at Monroe and a doctorate from Louisiana Tech University.

Dr. Glenn Feldman has been appointed director of the University of Alabama-Birmingham’s Center for Labor Education and Research. He holds two bachelor’s degrees from Birmingham-Southern College, a master’s from Vanderbilt University and a master’s and doctorate from Auburn University.

Dr. José B. Fernández has been appointed dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Central Florida. He was most recently associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Fernández holds a bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate from Florida State University.

Dr. Greg Garcia has been named academic dean of Grantham University (Mo.). He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 2003 after a 39-year career. Garcia holds a bachelor’s from American International University, a master’s from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and a doctorate from Montana State University.
