Atlantic Coast Conference Leads In Number of Black Head Basketball Coaches

College basketball generates millions of dollars every season. For the universities looking to play in the NCAA Tournament, affectionately known as the Big Dance, the man who leads their team can be the difference between sharing in the wealth or sitting on the shelf.

Black players make up approximately 70 percent of the rosters of the top teams. While the percentage of Black head basketball coaches is nowhere near that level, the Atlantic Coast Conference is making strides in promoting African Americans to top coaching positions.

The ACC is the only major conference with a majority of Black head coaches, with seven of the 12 men’s basketball teams led by Blacks.

“Where are the Indians, gays, and women?”
The ACC is actually behind in diversity. Where are the Indians, gays and women? You make it sound as if the ACC hired coaches because they were black. Would it shock you if they simply hired the best men available and they happened to be black? Are you concerned at the imbalance of black to white players? Maybe half the players should be white.

“glaring lack of Black female coaches”
Many of us recognize the tremendous increase in the number and the quality of Black Coaches in the ACC. The concentration now needs to be on the glaring lack of Black Female coaches in all of NCAA Basketball Programs. Black parents of players need to be more actively involved in these matters.

“kudos”
I am happy to read this story about the Atlantic Coast Conference. It is in recognition of the Black talent pool of coaches rather than a push for diversity as the previous reader commented. Black coaches have been historically and presently overlooked for major college positions. I applaud any story celebrating positive accomplishments of Black professionals. Kudos to the Atlantic Coast Conference.
