Recruitment Without Admission = Worthless
I applaud the Association of American Medical Colleges’s new Web site to increase the number of minority applications to medical school (see “AAMC Launches Campaign To Increase Medical School Diversity, Dec. 14). However, I feel that the movement is too little, and for me personally, too late.
Medical school is notoriously competitive; there is about one position for every other application. The lack of applications from minority students does have something to do with the amount of debt and the length of time it takes to earn a medical degree. But when it comes down to it, there are more than enough determined minority students applying. Those that are not applying are just being realistic because they know there are not enough seats in medical school. Some students will just keep knocking on the door. Some will give up. Others will seek alternatives, and for this they should be applauded. I was one of those students that applied and was rejected. I gave up, and then decided to seek an alternative. Currently, I attend medical school at the Medical University of the Americas in Nevis, West Indies.
