Bethune-Cookman College (Fla.) has received a $4.6 million gift from
an anonymous business associate of BCC alum Larry R. Handfield. The donation is the largest single gift by an individual in the college’s history. Handfield, a former drum major for BCC’s Marching Wildcats Band, is a criminal defense attorney in Miami.
Ohio’s Third Frontier Program has awarded $23.8 million to a 33-member coalition led by Cleveland State University. The award will establish a Wright Center of Innovation for Ohio on CSU’s downtown campus.
Fresno State University (Calif.) has received $10 million from The
Table Mountain Rancheria tribe to aid construction of the college’s $105 million Henry Madden Library. In honor of the gift, the north wing of the new library will feature an American Indian design theme. The gift is the single largest contribution in the university’s history.
Nelnet has donated $50,000 to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund to provide scholarships for Hispanic students planning to attend two- or four-year institutions in the state of California. Nelnet is a leading education-finance company.
Montgomery College (Md.) has been awarded a three-year, $471,142 grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education. The grant will be used to increase the numbers of minorities and women transferring to four-year engineering programs from the college.
Rice University (Texas) has received a $2.5 million gift from the government of Qatar for the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy. The gift will be used to create a new program for the study of world policies on stem cell research.
The Stanford Graduate School of Business (Calif.) has received a
$105 million gift from Nike founder and chairman Phil Knight. The school will use $100 million to help fund the construction of its new campus, which will be named after Knight. The other $5 million will be used to match faculty endowment gifts.
Queensborough Community College (N.Y.) has received a $12,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation to purchase human simulator mannequins and program materials for QCC’s nursing program. The mannequins can be programmed to imitate various physiological life signs and medical conditions.
The University of Michigan has received a $1 million gift from alums Ranvir and Adarsh Trehan to encourage continued collaborations between the university and the former students’ native country of India. Ranvir Trehan is the founder of SETA Corp., an IT solutions provider.
