Clemson University Faculty Senate: Change Tillman Hall Name

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Clemson University’s faculty senate is asking administrators to change the name of a building named after the late South Carolina governor and White supremacist Benjamin Tillman.

The Greenville News reported that the faculty approved a resolution saying the building named after Tillman should not hold a place of honor on the campus. The resolution said Tillman was an avowed racist and advocated White supremacy, which is at odds with the university’s mission and values.

The report said the faculty group passed the measure by an overwhelming majority and asks the university’s administrators take immediate action.

Clemson Board of Trustees Chairman David Wilkins has said the board does not have plans to address the issue.

The measure coincides with Clemson’s graduate student government, which also is seeking a name change.
