American Flag Ban on College Campus Draws Lawmakers’ Rebuke

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California GOP lawmakers are inserting themselves into a heated college campus debate over the right to display the American flag.

Sen. Janet Nguyen and fellow Republican lawmakers plan to announce a constitutional amendment Monday that would block public universities from banning the American flag.

The move comes after a student council at the University of California, Irvine last week banned the display of all flags before a higher student panel overturned it two days later.

The debate began when someone removed a U.S. flag that hung on a wall in the student government suite. An anonymous note said the flag shouldn’t be displayed in the lobby.

In voting to ban it, the student council noted that the American flag has been flown in times of “colonialism and imperialism.”
