Norfolk State Warns of Budget Deficit, Possible Layoffs

NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State University has warned its faculty of possible layoffs due to the likelihood of a budget deficit.

Media outlets report faculty members were told of the financial issues at a meeting Thursday.

Interim university president Eddie Moore Jr. says the budget deficit is expected to be between $14 million and $17 million. He says the university’s enrollment is expected to be about 5,100 for the fall semester, down from about 6,000 students in fall 2014.

In December, Norfolk State’s accrediting agency placed the school on probation, citing problems with the university’s administration, governance and finances.
