NC Auditor: Ousted Community College Head Spent on Himself

RALEIGH, N.C. — A new state audit says the former president of Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington spent nearly $36,000 in vending money on personal expenses and $3,000 extra to operate his leased car.

The report Tuesday by state Auditor Beth Wood’s office says the college should consult attorneys about suing former president Ted Spring to recover misappropriated funds.

Spring resigned in January from his $250,000-a-year job under pressure from campus trustees, who did not explain the president’s ouster. Spring sued in March claiming a violation of his employment contract.

Spring has no listed Wilmington phone number and could not be reached for comment. His attorney did not respond to messages seeking comment.

The college’s board says the report validates a suspected “pattern of misappropriation of funds and deceptive practices.”
