Scranton University Faculty Protest Contract on Move-in Day

SCRANTON, Pa. — Some University of Scranton faculty members picked freshman move-in day to demonstrate for what they called “a fair contract.”

About 50 faculty members marched Saturday up the central Commons toward dormitories where incoming freshmen and their parents were moving in.

The (Scranton) Times-Tribune reports that they lined up on either side and held signs but didn’t speak to students or parents unless approached.

The contract between the university and the faculty union expires at the end of the month.

Faculty grievances include delayed talks, university spending on outside lawyers and consultants, rising administrator salaries and too high a priority placed on athletics.

Administrators said in a statement last week that faculty salaries and total compensation rank in the top quintile nationally, but expenses have to be reduced.
