Macalester College Student Creates App to Stop Night Terrors

ST. PAUL, Minn. ― A student at Macalester College has created a smart watch application to help people suffering from night terrors.

Tyler Skluzacek tells KARE-TV that the app is inspired by the night terrors his father, an Iraq War veteran, experienced after serving a year overseas.

He entered a computer programming contest called HackDC last month with the goal of developing something that would help his father sleep better. In less than two days, his team wrote code and created the app, myBivy, which tracks heart rate and movement in an effort to predict night terrors.

The team was awarded $1,500 when the app was named Best PTSD Mobile App for Clinicians. It’s also trying to raise money through a crowdfunding campaign.

Skluzacek and his team hope to begin clinical trials on the app next spring.
