Dr. Khalil Gibran Muhammad is leaving his position as director of Harlem’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture next summer to take a tenured teaching position at Harvard University, according to the Amsterdam News.
Muhammad, a great-grandson of the Nation of Islam’s former leader Elijah Muhammad, has been guiding the center for the past five years.
“My aim while at the Schomburg was always to place it in a global context, and I will continue to advocate for it, to make sure people understand its role in our sense of democracy in the public sphere,” Muhammad told the Amsterdam News. The center focuses on the study of the African-American experience and the African Diaspora.
Muhammad, 43, is expected to complete the job transition in July 2016.
