Georgia Tech’s West gets tryout with Harlem Globetrotters

ATLANTA

The Harlem Globetrotters’ adopted theme song “Sweet Georgia Brown” would be a nice fit if Georgia Tech’s Mario West is successful in his tryout with the team.

West (6-5) was one of five players taken by the Globetrotters in their first player draft, the team announced on Monday. West will try out for the team in the fall.

The Harlem Globetrotters also drafted Anthony Atkinson of Barton College, 7-foot-9 Sun Ming Ming of China, Brent Petway of the University of Michigan, and Montevallo’s Marcus Kennedy.

West, Tech’s captain in the 2006-07 season, won the slam dunk competition at the Final Four, edging Petway in the final round.

West, from Douglasville, started only four games as a senior, averaging 4.7 points per game.

West will try to join the Globetrotters in their 82nd season. The team has traveled to 118 nations since 1926.
