Anderson is replacing Jim Haslam, a trustee since 1980 who has served as chairman.

Cates founded the Cates Co. in 1977, and was CEO and chairman of the company, later known as Mid-America Apartment Communities Inc., until he retired. He earned an industrial engineering degree from Georgia Tech and has served as the chairman of Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division and the vice chairman of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority.

Cates replaces Johnnie Amonette, who has served as trustee since 1995.

Talbott, of Knoxville, is the president of Holrob Investments, real estate development company. He earned a bachelor and law degree from UT and replaces Susan Richardson-Williams, who has served since 1995.
