IU Supercomputer No Longer Fastest Among College Computers

BLOOMINGTON Ind.

Indiana University’s supercomputer is no longer the fastest college-owned supercomputer.

“Big Red” came in fourth among university supercomputers and 30th among the world’s supercomputers, according to a list of the 500 most powerful such computers released at the recent International Supercomputer Conference in Dresden, Germany.

IU’s supercomputer trails new supercomputers at the universities of Texas and North Carolina, and Caltech.

When it went online last August, the IBM supercomputer could perform more than 20.4 trillion numerical operations a second. At that time, it was ranked as the fastest academic supercomputer and the 23rd fastest supercomputer in the world.

“Big Red” was ranked 31st on a list released in November, but IU officials said it rose in the June rankings after an IBM-led team upgraded the machine to help process food stamp, Medicaid and welfare claims for the state.
