CUPA Survey Shows Higher Ed Administrators’ Pay Increases

Diverse Staff

The overall median base salary for individuals in higher education increased by 2.1 percent last year among the 92 percent of the institutions who participated in both the 2014-15 and the recently released 2015-16 Administrators in Higher Education Salary Survey. The College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR), which conducted the survey for the 49th year, received responses from 1,180 U.S. colleges and universities.

The data is the result of compilation of the salaries of 53,981 administrators in 190 senior-level administrative positions.

While the 2.1 percent increase outpaced 0.1 percent inflation last year as represented by the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index, the overall median base salary (MBS) showed a decrease from the 2.4 marks registered in the 2014 and ’15 reports.

Among the survey’s other findings:

  • Minority CEOs of college or university systems had an MBS of $322,524 vs. non-minority salary of $400,794
  • Female Academic Associates/Assistant Deans of Law had an MBS of $172,630 to male deans’ $171,345
  • Female Academic Associates or Assistant Deans of Business had an MBS of $116,758 as compared to the $144,308 of their male counterparts
  • Chief Diversity Officers had an MBS of $127,633 at public institutions, $105,150 at private institutions and $87,763 at religious-based institutions.

Among other criteria, the results were based on salaries in effect as of November 1, 2015.
