Green Named New University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor

LINCOLN, Neb. ― The new chancellor of the University of Nebraska’s Lincoln campus has been selected from the university system’s ranks.

Ronnie Green, 54, was named Wednesday as UNL’s new chancellor by NU President Hank Bounds. Green previously served as vice president for agriculture and natural resources of the NU system and is UNL’s Harlan vice chancellor of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Green said his plans as chancellor include raising the university’s academic profile, including its stature as a research university.

“We’re not only going to be a member of the Big Ten Conference, but we’re going to become a distinctive member of the Big Ten Conference ― distinctive in ways that matter to Nebraska,” Green said.

Nebraska joined the Big Ten in 2011.

The university began the search for a new chancellor last spring after UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman announced his plan to leave the office and return to the law school faculty. Green was named UNL’s interim senior vice chancellor for academic affairs shortly after Perlman made the announcement.

Green grew up in Virginia and received bachelor and master’s degrees in animal science from Virginia Tech and Colorado State University, respectively. He completed his doctorate jointly at the University of Nebraska and the USDA-ARS U.S. Meat Animal Research Center in animal breeding and genetics in 1988.

Green said at Wednesday’s news conference that he wants to improve the percentage of students who graduate on time and increase diversity among faculty and staff.

His selection also drew praise from outside the university.

“Ronnie is a visionary who understands that solving the coming challenge of feeding 9 billion people around the globe is going to depend on constant innovation and hard work here in Nebraska,” said U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse, a Nebraska Republican who served as president of Midland University in Fremont before his election in 2014.
