Duke University President to Step Down in 2017

by Associated Press

DURHAM, N.C. ― Duke University President Richard H. Brodhead has announced that he will step down from his post in June 2017.

A statement from the school said Brodhead spoke to the board of trustees and the academic council on Thursday to discuss his plans. Brodhead will take a year’s sabbatical before returning to teaching and writing.

Brodhead said that with many critical initiatives nearing completion, “it seems the right time for Duke to recruit a new leader to guide the next chapter of its progress.”

Brodhead came to Duke from Yale University in 2004. He has led a renewal of Duke’s physical campus, initiating more than $1 billion in construction and renovation projects. He also oversaw the creation of the Duke-NUS Medical School in partnership with the National University of Singapore.
